String Inverters are the most common type of inverter used in residential and commercial solar installations. They work by connecting a series, or “string”, of solar panels together in a series circuit. The DC electricity produced by the panels is sent to the string inverter, which converts it into AC electricity. String inverters are cost-effective and efficient, but their performance can be affected if one panel in the string is shaded or underperforming.
Microinverters are a newer technology that offers a solution to the limitations of string inverters. Instead of connecting all the panels in a string to one inverter, each panel is connected to its own microinverter. This allows each panel to operate independently, improving the system’s performance in situations where some panels are shaded or underperforming. Microinverters are more expensive than string inverters, but they can increase the overall efficiency and lifespan of the solar energy system.
Hybrid Inverters, also known as multi-mode inverters, are capable of managing the energy from solar panels and a battery storage system. They can also provide backup power in case of a grid outage. Hybrid inverters are becoming increasingly popular as more homeowners and businesses opt for solar-plus-storage solutions.
Power Optimizers are a compromise between string inverters and microinverters. Like microinverters, power optimizers are attached to each solar panel. However, instead of converting the DC electricity to AC, power optimizers “condition” the DC electricity before sending it to a centralized inverter. This allows them to mitigate the effects of shading and increase the efficiency of the solar energy system.
